Youth Ambassador Project
Our goal is to make this an ongoing project that enables the Youth Ambassadors (YAs) of one generation to grow into the College Mentors (CMs) for the subsequent generation. The formation of authentic and nurturing relationships between young adults and youth will cultivate hope and willpower amongst future generations that will one day work together to drive change in our society.
Our belief with this project is that intervention with a young, but mature student with directed modules and mentorship will have a significantly positive, downstream effect on short-term and long-term education outcomes. These include, but are not limited to:
Modules will focus on providing a positive group identity and sense of purpose, establishing mentor relationships and connections at universities, and fostering a mature perspective that values service, leadership, and education from start to finish.
If you are an excited and driven high school student, then we encourage you to apply. Its a great way to learn from current UC San Diego students who are passionate in similar projects.

Pilot Project: Hill Cut, Sierra Leone
In August 2012, our team flew to Freetown, Sierra Leone to meet the Hill Cut Community and worked with the community-based organizations to develop their community vision and what we could do to support their programs. The organizations identified expanding education access, increasing economic mobility, intervening in public health needs, and owning community land as their 5 development priorities.
With the help of our $20,000 Green Initiative Grant from UCSD, the start up resources have provided a solar-powered community center which the day school and evening adult literacy classes are held in, a meeting space area, a computer lab, and a small first-aid center.
Since September 2012, the CBO and Women’s Association have given 5 Continuing Education scholarships to deserving students, started 5 business co-ops, and secured a plot of land to begin a garden. The team plans to visit the Hill Cut community again in September 2013 to implement more microloans and build a biosand filtration system.

UCSD Supports Sustainable Water R&D
The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) of UC San Diego recently awarded a generous grant to the Community Hope's Sustainable Water Project.
TGIF provides funding for projects that reduce UC San Diego’s negative impact on the environment, in addition to making UC San Diego more sustainable in both the social and environmental sense. Through project grants, the goal of TGIF is to enable and empower students to become leaders for sustainability on campus at UC San Diego.
Through this grant, students and faculty members of The Community Hope Project will continue research and development of water filtration methods, with the hopes of providing a sustainable water infrastructure for the Hill Cut Community of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Members of Community Hope will be traveling to Sierra Leone in August to implement their water purification systems to provide clean water to over 200 families.

Achieving Sustainable Development
Working alongside the leadership of the Community Based Organization and Women's Association in Hill Cut, we achieved the following:
• Established a community garden to augment the limited local food supply, and to create opportunities for building trust, cohesion and shared goals among community members. • Build a local community center (using locally engineered solar panels and equipment through an organization called Energy for Opportunity that will act as a resource and meeting place for community education and sustainable development. • Funded “start up” community-owned resources including bicycles, computers and furniture. These resources will provide low-cost access to transportation and education to local community members. • Created and funded local “Community Pillar” and Community Innovator” awards to inspire and reward those groups/individuals in the community who promote connection and trust within the community, and/or create sustainable innovations that better the health or well-being of the community. • Established funds to employ two community members to be trained in the maintenance of the solar electricity panels with the agreement that they will use their developing skills to educate and expand solar energies in Hill Cut and neighboring communities. |
